All it took was one conversation with his relative Dave, to convince John Humphrey to dedicate time and energy to the Sherwin Elderly Home in Newton. Dave, the Maintenance Supervisor at the residence, happened to mention to John that the facility lacked an outdoor patio for the residents to enjoy. The two teamed up instantly and worked every spare minute they had to complete the patio in time for the residents’ annual summer BBQ party.
Their primary concern was safety. All trip hazards had to be eliminated. The existing area was slightly pitched, so John leveled the existing grade as he lay the 16” x 16” patio blocks. Once the 50’ x 30’ patio was level and each block was in place, John created a small retaining wall to allow for a garden and flowers that could be seen and enjoyed even from a wheelchair. As he worked, John took charge and enlisted the help of facilities staff to keep the area moist. An electrician and plumber assisted in the installation of a fountain in the center of the patio.
It took dedication, compassion and two weeks to complete the patio in time for the BBQ. And it’s a gift the residents of Sherwin Elderly will enjoy for many seasons to come.
Of the experience John says, “It looks awesome and it was totally worth it.” |
