It was the indomitable Evil Empire who took home the prize. Despite conceding the first round to rival team No Balls, No Glory, the Empire lunged back to run the table, pounding every other team on their way to the finals. The trophy was re-captured from last year’s champion, CB Richard Ellis, and is once again prominently displayed in team captain Jim Stadler’s office. For Stadler, the victory came as sweet redemption after going down hard in last year’s tournament.
Throughout the night, periods of fierce competition erupted on the court, especially between rivals Dyer Brown and Gensler. It was a Cinderella story for the Dyer Brown Demolition, who waged battles of epoch and unexpected proportion against EOP’s Summer Street Brawlers, LMP’s Leggat United and Gensler’s Raging Ball. Dyer Brown was seeded 17th after round robin play – narrowly qualifying for the play-offs, thanks to Nickerson PR’s “Red Hot,” team, who skipped the play-offs and won the race to the Harp for the after party.
Sheer tenacity earned Dyer Brown a well-deserved place in the finals, but elimination by the Evil Empire was brief and brutal.
There were many notable entries in the enthusiasm category, including Cresa Partners and Studio Troika. SMMA’s SMACK Attack showed flashes of brilliance and could prove to be a contender next season. ADD, INC returned to the tourney in their usual sartorial splendor, but failed to advance any further than last year’s tournament. Once again, the hard-hitting contest proved that dodgeball is truly a sport of degradation, violence and exclusion.
Special thanks goes to Pavillion Floors and Bay State Air for keeping contestants carbed up, happy and hydrated.
The battle to wrench the trophy from the grasp of the Evil Empire is sure to be ferocious next Spring, when the industry re-convenes for the 5th Annual (and much anticipated) Commodore Dodgeball Tournament! See you there!
