When was the last time you saw 40 inches of new snow? We did! It was last week, on the 6th Annual Commodore ski trip. The 35 hardy participants on this year’s trip arrived at Killington in the midst of a storm that transformed “The Beast” into a winter wonderland.
The 4-hour pilgrimage by bus to the mountaintop was filled with nervous anticipation as the group drove steadfast through the rain…hoping for snow. And snow is exactly what they got…not powder… more like wet cement, actually…but what a day!
The first runs from the K1 gondola to Killington Peak were exhilarating. Icy goggles didn’t stop the group from migrating to Bear Peak. Anyone who skied off the trail, found themselves stuck waist deep in snow. Mother Nature provided some natural exfoliation as wind-whipped snow bullets pelted the skiers and froze their goggles.
There was a lot of skiing by feel rather than sight, a lot of trusting instincts …and the occasional face plant. But everyone warmed up in the lodge over lunch and then it was back out for two more hours before heading back to Boston.
It was a raucous return trip, with pizza, libations, stories of the day and a sampling of everyone’s iTunes collection, from Duran Duran to Marvin Gay. It was a great day! Nobody broke anything and everyone who ventured out in the storm came back to tell the tale. See you again in 2011!
