Before I
got into construction, I co-owned the largest roller skating and
bowling venue in the state. It had 60 lanes and was called the
Wal-Lex Recreation Facility. It was an unusual career. I had
my life threatened more than once…and I met some interesting
people. We used to feed Doug Flutie and his brother when they
were kids…long before Doug was famous. We’d sit them on flour
barrels back in the kitchen, because we didn’t want them taking
up space for paying customers out front.
In 2002 I
left the recreation business. I leased the land to a developer
and negotiated a 60-year deal, with CVS and Staples…one year for
every lane. Life changes…but people don’t. The same things
matter in construction that mattered in the recreation business.
People just want you to deliver on your word.
I’ve been
involved in local politics and I’ve sat on the boards of some
non-profits. When I’m not working, I’m usually on the golf
course…or in the kitchen cooking for friends and family…or I’m
making wine. This year’s cabernet is one of our finest. |
