Sustainable design isn’t tree-hugging, pie-in-the-sky idealism. It’s progress, evolution and innovation in the building industry. It’s one of the ways that today’s cutting-edge construction managers define themselves. It’s how we leave the environment – man made and natural – better than we found it. It’s our responsibility. Sustainability is more than just bamboo floors and LEED credits. It’s the attitude that we, as professionals in an industry that’s been slow to change, are obligated to do a better job in the future than we’ve done in the past.
Commodore Builders thrives on change and innovation. We understand the compelling need for high-performance buildings, and the high performance teams who build them. It’s not rocket science. Sustainability is practical, possible and it doesn’t have to cost more. We embrace sustainable design and construction and we’re taking steps to ensure all of our projects, LEED-certified or not, make the least possible impact on our environment. |

We can talk about sustainability until we’re blue in the face, but it’s walking the walk that keeps Commodore charged up about being green. We’ve got a Green Building Committee made up of representatives from every facet of our organization. We meet monthly to explore new ways that we can minimize our impact on the environment and help build a better planet.
Each month we publish a “Did You Know” newsletter for employees and any of our clients who want to share in what we’re learning about sustainability and hear about the progress we’re making. You can view our newsletter by clicking on this link.
So far, our efforts include:
- An NStar audit of Chapel Bridge Park to identify more efficient light fixtures for our office at 80 Bridge Street.
- An office recycling program that includes cans & bottles, cardboard, white paper and batteries.
- Implementation of green cleaning practices that include environmental and health-friendly cleaning products.
- Development of standardized procedures for jobsite recycling and waste management.
- Acquisition of a “bulb eater” for safe disposal of fluorescent light bulbs from demolition sites.
- Development and implementation of specific employee training guidelines and goals for LEED professional accreditation.
- Streamlined internal documentation processes that minimize paper consumption and waste.

"I want to thank the three of you for what was one of my most enjoyable projects in ten years at HMI. From the beginning you all were so friendly, responsive, helpful, insightful, to all of my questions, uncertainties, panics, and everything else. The place looks great and the feedback I've heard has been nothing short of fantastic. I was amazed that at almost any time of day or evening I could get one of you on the phone or a timely email response." |
