Expansion of The IDEC Neurological business unit of Biogen from Cambridge to Wellesley sparked the complete gut and re-fit of 52K square feet in the Wellesley Office Park. Commodore worked directly with Equity Office Properties throughout the 12-week construction project. Because the Office Park was almost fully occupied, with tenants above and below the new Biogen space, noise limitations and zero-tolerance for disruption required 2nd shift and weekend work to complete the aggressive schedule. Supplies and equipment were either hoisted through windows or brought up in passenger elevators during off-hours to work around the lack of over-sized elevators.
Biogen’s new upscale space at Wellesley Office Park uses vibrant colors and glossy high end finishes throughout. Glass complements the bold gold, green, tomato red, brown, and tan accent walls. A dramatic lime green curved glass divider separates offices from the break area. Extensive millwork is carried throughout. The lobby and meeting area contain muted bamboo floors. A high-end plastic laminate lines the walls of the café/kitchen service area and the mother’s room. Extensive audio-visual equipment, touch screen speaker phones, video conferencing, and large flat screen monitors populate the state-of-the-art conference rooms.
Biogen’s mission is reflected throughout the space. The lobby displays a giant DNA Double Helix, while the walls are lined with patient quotes and signature “We Will” statements. The hallways are home to seven display screens marking the progress of research and a timeline showing notable achievements.
