The
build-out of First Trade Union Bank was one of six simultaneous projects
under construction for Cargo Ventures, a transportation real estate
developer. The branch bank is located in a newly-constructed building in the
heart of South Boston. Managing the lead times for the unique materials used
throughout the space and coordinating with the bank’s three security vendors
were critical to the project’s success. On opening day, the bank featured a
grand teller line, elegant greeting area, new corporate offices, conference
rooms and a kitchen area.
Commodore self-performed the drywall installation. Extensive custom millwork
used the center (heart-sap) of red birch trees to encase the
wall-to-wall glass offices. A unique type of wood called Timeless Timber was
used in the design of the long teller line. The wood is derived from sunken
timbers lost at the bottom of rivers and lakes during logging hundreds of
years ago. The wood is recovered from the Great Lakes by scuba divers and
then preserved. The bank’s Italian stone floors complement the texture of
the unusual wood.
The
lighting was specially styled to invoke the essence of the bank’s logo.
Dramatic radius soffits were created using flexible tracks.
Just
days before the bank’s grand opening, a last minute design change required
the wood paneling to be partially replaced with a glass wall, providing the
branch manager with a better view of the teller line. The wall was rapidly
redesigned and installed in just three days. Constant coordination and
collaboration with the bank’s security vendors and ATM supplier were
essential to the team’s ability to meet the bank’s scheduled move-in and
Grand Opening.
