This 3,000 SF build-out converted three separate dorm rooms into one high-end condominium unit for the Headmaster of MIT’s Edgerton house. The dorms were converted into a two-story unit, connected by a communicating stair. The 12-week fast track schedule required the team to work closely with the owner, architect and occupants upfront to meet budget requirements and to ensure that residents of the dorm were not disturbed. During the preconstruction phase, representatives from MIT Housing, MIT Facilities and MIT Project Management worked with the Housemaster and the Commodore team to design the space on budget.
The first floor consists of the kitchen, dining room, pantry, living room and half-bath. The second floor contains two bedrooms, a family room, office, laundry room, master bathroom and full bath. The communicating stair connecting the first and second floors is designed with a uniquely curved landing. The steel stair, with wood floor treads and risers, required extreme attention to detail to ensure that the wood handrail cap curved exactly along the radius of the steel.
High-end finishes specified throughout the space required careful consideration during the procurement phase to ensure that the 12-week schedule would be achieved without compromising design intent.
High-end millwork was installed in the kitchen and family room and pre-engineered wood floors were installed on the lower level. The bathrooms feature granite countertops, tile back-splashes and tiled showers. |
