Commodore’s
sixteenth project for Salem Five is the renovation of the bank’s
9,000 SF branch in downtown Salem. On a busy corner in historic
Salem, the space was previously occupied as by another bank. When it
was acquired by Salem Five, it was designated as Salem Five’s
hometown branch bank. During the twelve-week construction period the
100 year-old building received both interior renovations and
exterior repairs.
Exterior
renovations on this highly visible, trafficked site addressed both
structural maintenance requirements and aesthetic improvements. The
building had been neglected for years, requiring the facade to be
stripped. Bricks were replaced and the building was stuccoed.
Exterior water damage was repaired with caulking and patching. Roof
and plumbing work was coordinated with the final exterior painting.
Consultation with the City of Salem’s design review board was
required for color approval.
Interior classical
finishes were refurbished to achieve the signature Salem Five look.
The scope of interior work included new offices, conference rooms, a
longer teller line, a kitchenette, base-building bathroom upgrades
to meet codes, an upgraded HVAC system and upgraded mechanicals. To
replace the electrical panels, the building was shut down on a
Saturday to minimize disruption. The sagging, aging wood floor was
replaced with marble and granite. Signature coastal New
England-style murals were installed to complement the elegant
millwork and blue accents. The millwork was refurbished,
particularly around the dome rotunda. A grand chandelier, visible
from all angles, is housed in the dome. Automatic pullies are used
to raise and lower it for maintenance.
Around the
corner on Essex Street, work has already begun building the Salem
Five Community Center and the 3-year partnership between Commodore
and Salem Five continues.
