Project Background
Commodore Builders completed the 31,500 SF historic renovation of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist’s monastery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The project, six years in the making, restored Saint John’s monastery and the connected chapel and guest house, through extensive interior and exterior improvements.
Chapel
Inside the chapel, stone walls were washed and restored. Arches in the cloister were encased in frameless glass to enhance the view of the courtyard and adjacent Charles River. Beautiful original interior details, such as unique hardwood floors, stained glass and mosaic marble flooring were all painstakingly restored and refinished. A completely new lighting system was installed to highlight the arches, columns, stone work and overall architecture of the building.
Monastery & Guest House
Renovations within the monastery include new carpeting, lighting, paint and wood floors that were sanded and refinished. Gas-fired inserts were installed in four fire places. New electrical and tel/data systems were installed in the guest rooms and monastery bedrooms. At the rear of the monastery, an addition to the second and third floor was constructed for a new library. Exterior renovations include new underground drainage, brick walkways and stairs, and concrete ramps to the vestibule.
